Abstract: Mexico’s crisis of violence is multidimensional and complex, however, the failure of the
State’s governments and institutions is clear, with a multitude of examples at the local, state, and
national level.
In looking at three case studies, this thesis looks at the ways inequality, machismo,
and corruption played a role in the deaths of three victims of femicides while pointing to how
these factors also contribute to Mexico’s larger crises of violence before giving indicators in how
to better move forward including investigations into State corruption, de-escalating violence, and
policy solutions aimed at lowering high levels of inequality.
